21 Dec: Dinner at Steirereck

Forward planning got us a decent reservation at Steirereck, top restaurant in Vienna, three Michelin stars and rated top 10 in the world.

The restaurant, unsurprisingly, is over the top in various aspects.

You normally have one amuse bouche offering or sometimes even two or possibly three. Steirereck offers us six tastings to demonstrate Viennese cuisine! The entire table was filled.

Every course comes with a place card to help you appreciate what you eating and gives you some interesting background to the rarer food items. As such, I will let the pictures do the talking.

A glass of rose champagne to kick off the evening

Menu offers a tasting menu of 6 or 7 courses with two options for every course. There is also an Ala Carte menu with completely different food offerings.

The bread trolley - I lost count of the number of varieties on offer. Every loaf is different with interesting options including black sausage loaf, pork crackling bread, chorizo bread and sweet Christmas bread.

Now that is what you call a cheese trolley !

Petite Fours came with a snow globe (as if it was not white enough outside)

The restaurant makes/matures some cheese themselves. That table is really one incredibly large cheese maturing.

A very memorable dinner indeed. This restaurant really deserves its accolades. We left feel full but not stuff. Portion control here is very good.

  1. Ken,

Thanks for the blog. I like the way you travel.

Question: each course card above ends with a number. The number is unique to the course. What does it refer to?

  2. Not sure. I suspect it relates to the specific dish. The cards are so detailed, I suspect even the substitution of one minor ingredient requires a new card.
